Forth coming events
We would like to invite you to our conference 'Time for change' Leeds BME Women's Forum's 1st Annual Conference on Thursday 17th of November 2011.
Why this Conference?
The aim of the conference is to influence decision making and to improve equality for women in Leeds by making the case that greater equality for women is better for everyone. The conference will provide the opportunity for local decision makers to be informed about the extent of women’s inequality in Leeds. It will also provide the space for decision makers and women’s networks to explore practical ways of connecting the reality of women’s lives with policy decisions.
The event will be held at The Carriageworks, Millennium Square, Leeds 2 3AD between 10.00 and 3.30.
The shape of the day
Councillor Eileen Taylor, as Chair of the Leeds BME Women’s Forum, will oversee the total event and Cllr. Blake (Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council) will open the conference. A short presentations from Archana Choksi (Oxfam) will set the scene followed by speakers Tom Riordan (Chief Executive of Leeds City Council), Pragna Patel (Southall Black Sisters) and Ravinder Samra (Dosti) exploring current policy agendas, how they help or hinder the ethnic minority women’s sector, and what can be done to promote their empowerment.
Following the presentations there will be question and answer session with a panel of the speakers who will respond to what they have heard and participant’s questions. In the afternoon there are three workshops: Where are BME women in Big society and localism, What are our local structures and how to influence them, and local lobbying for issues faced by BME women/ women’s organisations. We are hoping to have practical action points and agreement for a way forward at the end of the conference.
What we would like from you
Reflecting on input from the speakers at the start of the day, we would like you be part of discussions with local decision-makers. We would also like you to engage with the panel of local councillors, officers and voluntary sector organisations in the workshops to discuss issues and come up with practical action points for way forward.
Please see attached invite with programme and booking form. If you have any questions or would like more information please contact Archana Choksi (achoksi@oxfam.org.uk or 07879115502).
We very much look forward to meeting you.
Yours sincerely,
Cllr. Eileen Taylor
